Biography
Demetrius of Phalerum was an ancient Greek philosopher, orator and statesman who was appointed governor of Athens by the Macedonian king Cassander. Demetrius wrote extensively on the subjects of history, rhetoric and literary criticism. As a governor, he favored the upper classes and gave effect to the ideas of such earlier political theorists as Aristotle. When the old democracy was restored, Demetrius escaped to Thebes and then to Egypt, where he became prominent at the court of Ptolemy I, enjoying a high reputation as an orator.
